A plane falls from the sky… who’s to blame?

Black clock showing 8.30.

THE crash of an EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo could be the work of terrorists. Authorities said while other hypotheses were being considered, it’s more likely that it was due to a terrorist attack rather than a technical failure. The flight crashed yesterday (May 19) with 66 passengers onboard.

“A technical problem, a fire or a motor malfunction doesn’t cause an instantaneous accident and the crew has time to react,” said Mr Jean-Paul Troadec, former president of the French air accident investigation bureau. “Here, the crew didn’t say anything.”

Before its plunge into the Mediterranean Sea, the plane had made 90-degree swerves to the left and then 360-degree turns to the right. No distress calls were made and the weather was fine.

Still in the air: The G is wondering if it should pay for Changi Airport’s upcoming Terminal 5. No cost was given but estimates go into “tens of billions”. The current plan is that the G will foot the bill but it is now thinking that maybe it should let the private sector come in and own part of the terminal.

After the deployment of new stealth motorcycles on the road to catch irresponsible motorists, the Traffic Police said yesterday it will putting up new speed cameras at accident-prone areas. Portable and able to take sharper images at night, the cameras will be used in 44 areas including West Coast Highway, Braddell Road and Changi Coast Road.

Also in the works: A solar system to power Bishan Depot by the end of the year. SMRT said the system can generate enough electricity to power 270 four-room HDB flats for a year. Trains within the depot however will still be powered by existing electricity sources.

Jabing Kho escaped the gallows again after a last-minute stay of execution thanks to his lawyer Jeanette Chong-Aruldoss who successfully filed an appeal at 11pm last night. The deadline was given by Judicial Commissioner Kannan Ramesh after Ms Chong-Aruldoss failed in her argument for a stay earlier in the day. If she had not filed the appeal in time, Kho would have been executed this morning.

This is Kho’s second 11th-hour stay after the first was granted less than 48 hours before he was due to hang in November last year. The 31-year-old was convicted for killing a Chinese worker in 2008.
