1. Higher payouts for workers who aren’t re-employed on cards
OLDER workers not offered re-employment after they turn 62 could receive up to 3.5 times his or her salary, capped at $13,000 (The previous cap was $10,000). The higher payout was part of recommendations made by a committee tasked to look at how to keep more workers employed when the re-employment age limit is adjusted from 65 to 67 starting in July next year.
2. URA needs more time to look at short-term rentals
“No clear consensus” was reached after a four-month public consultation to decide if people can legally sublet their private apartments on websites like Airbnb. The G said the issue of short-term stays was a “complex, multi-faceted” one and would need more time to review its current policy, which makes it illegal to lease a home for less than six months.
3. Traffic police spring a black surprise
Watching out for the traffic police could be a bit harder now with its new matte-black motorcycles on the road. Pictures of the new vehicles began surfacing online last week; apparently, they are being used to catch motorists who use their phones while driving.
4. Long working hours keeping S’porean families apart: Survey
One in 10 people spend six hours or fewer with their family members a week. According to the new study commissioned by The Families for Life Council, the main barriers that kept families from spending time together were long working hours, children being busy at school, and family members preferring to play computer games and watching television.
5. NUS to extend grade-free scheme for freshmen
First-year students at the National University of Singapore will be able to write off most of their bad grades from this August. They will be allowed to exclude grades for up to eight of the 10 modules they have to take; the university believes this reduces academic stress and encourages students to explore unfamiliar subjects.
