Woman attempts daylight bribery offers police officer S$10000 to let her go

Singapore is known for many things — world class air and sea-ports, clean and safe streets, as well as being one of the least corrupt places in the world.

Well, one 42-year-old woman may have tried to put Singapore’s incorruptibility to the test.

The Singapore Police Force has released a statement saying that the woman was arrested for attempting to bribe a police officer.

The incident occurred last Friday (April 14) at around 1.30pm. According to the statement, officers from Central Division, together with Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Chan Wai Hoong “were conducting enforcement operations at Middle Road when they conducted a check on the woman.”

The woman had repeatedly offered ASP Chan $10,000 to let her go. ASP Chan rejected the bribe and the woman was subsequently arrested for attempting to bribe a police officer.

The case will be referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau and the woman is also being investigated for “suspected involvement in vice activities under the provisions of the Women’s Charter.”

Attempting to bribe a police officer is an offence and faces a fine of up to S$100,000 or a maximum five years’ jail, or both.

Last July, a South Korean woman, Hwang Eunmi, was sentenced to two months’ jail for attempting to bribe police officers with $1,550 to release her after being arrested for an immigration related offence.
