This 3-minute round of Singlish charades is surprisingly compelling
Hood Champions, a project by a company to pit people from different neighbourhoods against one another in specific competitions, is currently holding its first ever Singlish Charades competition.
Which basically consists of contestants acting out Singaporean words and phrases, with the same limitations of normal charades.
Normal charades, for the uninitiated, is a word guessing game.
It is an acting game in which one player acts out a word or phrase, often by miming similar-sounding words, and the other players guess the word or phrase. The idea is to use physical rather than verbal language to convey the meaning to another party.
While there have been a steady stream of similar concepts such as Taboo Singapore edition, the aforementioned games consist mainly of singular words like “Satay” or “Kiasu”, which gets old real fast.
But when the phrase you have to guess is, “She manja him until he happy like bird”, the complexity provides for surprisingly gripping entertainment.
The phrase de-Singlished roughly translates to: “She pampers me so much that I become deliriously happy.”
Good job Team TB Oreo from Telok Blangah, that video made us happy like bird too.
