More expert tips to fix MRT but will it cause fares to go up?

Morning Call, 0830, clock

POORLY made and unreliable parts were some reasons that the MRT has been breaking down and these should be replaced sooner than later. There should be more inspections of lines and equipment, and buying new technological systems that better detect faults will help, too.

These and other recommendations were submitted to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), which released the full list of more than 40 recommendations yesterday (April 19). The list was put together by a panel of 13 experts tasked to make the rail network more reliable about four months ago.

LTA said it would review and adopt the more urgent recommendations, but that some were already addressed in newer lines such as the Downtown and Thomson-East Coast lines. By adopting these recommendations, it’s possible fares may go up in order to pay for them, said an expert interviewed by TODAY.

You can now use Apple Pay in Singapore – if you’re an American Express (Amex) card user. The e-wallet by Apple was officially launched yesterday and although limited to Amex users for now, Visa card users will be able to use Apple Pay in a few months.

If you’re on a Samsung device, Samsung Pay is scheduled to launch here in June.

The Prime Minister yesterday met with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to deliver joint statements about peace in the Middle East. Speaking from the Prime Minister’s Office in Israel, PM Lee Hsien Loong said he hoped Israelis and Palestinians can restart talks for a two-state solution.

“We are friends with both Israel and Palestine. We hope that you will be able to resume negotiations and make progress towards a just and durable solution to a longstanding and complex conflict,” he said.
