Hello, can rain for a little longer or not?

Black clock showing 8.30.

It’s a very good morning today because it rained. At least it’s rained in the east for a while just before the sun came up, , which is more than can be said for drought-stricken areas in the region. ST reported today that farmer suicides are increasing in India, coffee trees are dying in Vietnam and rice yields are shrinking in Thailand. In neighbouring Malaysia, the Linggiu reservoir which Singapore draws water from is at an all-time low, reported TODAY on Saturday.  And here we are complaining about the heat…and taking plenty of showers…

Here’s a new ditty we should teach our children:

Rain, rain, don’t go away

Please rain here, all day, every day

Little children don’t want to play

They mostly play indoors anyway

The news is thin today so we’ll pose a series of questions instead:

It seems that China has managed to persuade Brunei, Laos and Cambodia to join it in making a statement about the South China Sea which is a bit at odds with the Asean position. According to Chinese Foreign minister Wang Yi,  the four agreed that territorial disputes over some islands, rocks and shoals in the South China Sea were “not an issue between China and Asean as a whole”‘.

Now just what did China say or do to the three countries?

People’s Action Party’s proposed Bukit Batok candidate Murali Pillai has a $1.9m renewal plan for residents, which he announced yesterday just two days after Singapore Democratic Party unveiled a four point social programme. Mr Murali said that the plan – under the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme funded by the G – will only be carried out if he got elected.

Now just whose money is it anyway?

Some 32,000 individuals have invested S$810 million in Singapore Savings Bonds across the first six months of their issue, which is a paltry take-up rate given that the G had planned to issue between S$2 billion and S$4 billion of SSBs in 2015, and up to S$4 billion in 2016. According to TODAY, most  investors were those aged 49 and above, followed by those aged 31 to 40 and 41 to 48. Those aged between 18 and 30 formed the smallest group.

Now who are these 18 year olds who are planning their long-term financial future or is this Daddy’s money?

Here’s what actress Jeanette Aw who took the Best Actress prize in last night’s Star awards said: “To this Mediacorp senior executive who said ‘fat hope’ when asked to predict my chances, well, hope has always been slim or even non-existent for me. But I guess today, against all odds, there’s still hope.”

Now just who is this senior executive who should be eating his words?
