Bukit Batok: The straight fight that nearly wasn’t
A STRAIGHT fight. That’s what it’s going to be at Bukit Batok, with the People’s Action Party (PAP) and Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) confirmed as candidates in the by-election, although for a moment there, it almost seemed as if it wasn’t to be.
Candidates from the two parties, Mr Murali Pillai from the PAP and Dr Chee Soon Juan from the SDP, were at the nomination centre, Keming Primary School, since 10am to submit their papers. But brief, surprise appearances were made by three other individuals.
Private-hire car driver Shirwin Eu, 32, turned up with the intention to run as an independent candidate, but was later disqualified from standing after he could not find any assentors to support his nomination. Ms Han Hui Hui, 24, who ran for Radin Mas SMC as an independent candidate in last year’s General Election, was also spotted at the nomination centre. She said she wouldn’t be running, however, adding that she was there to “support whoever will fight for transparency and accountability”.
Former SDP member Kwan Yue Keng, 68, also appeared to be raring to go with a set of nomination forms, saying that he intended to contest the seat should Dr Chee be disqualified. This is to ensure that there was no walkover, he said. He ended up not filing the papers.
So what happens now? Bukit Batok residents can look forward to nine days of campaigning before they take to the polls on May 7.
