An update on upcoming upgrades

Morning Call, 0830, clock

SURPRISE surprise, the two men vying to be top dog in Bukit Batok are fighting over upgrading plans for the single-seat constituency as the countdown begins to Polling Day on May 7.

Rallies by both candidates begin tonight, and you can expect to hear all about that $1.9 million Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) that Mr Murali Pillai from the People’s Action Party (PAP) put forward as an incentive to vote for him – but now seems will go ahead no matter who gets the job.

Yes, you heard right: The money’s there for whoever is voted in. But who will do a better job spending that money? That’s one question voters will have the next eight days to think about.

Whether you’re voting or not in the by-election, you won’t miss the big upgrade the G is planning for the new 21.5km North-South Corridor expressway that will now include cycling and pedestrian paths linking towns in the north to the city.

Construction will start next year and take about 10 years with a target completion date in 2026, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said yesterday (April 28).

Speaking about upgrades, the only Singaporean known to be charged so far for crimes linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) is getting two more charges added to his case – one for cheating his former employer, a Swiss private bank; and another for asking a client to lie about his investment.

The State’s lawyer, Second Solicitor-General Kwek Mean Luck, is not leaving anything to chance: he persuaded the court yesterday to keep Yeo Jiawei, 33, in custody and deny him access to lawyers, arguing that the case was “without doubt, the most complex cross-border investigation” that the Commercial Affairs Department has ever seen. This is only the third time the State has ever made such a request.

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is thinking about an upgrade, too.

As part of a May Day makeover, the labour movement wants to extend its services to professional, managers and executives (PMEs), including freelancers and non-union members. PMEs and older workers have been hit hardest as more workers are being laid off in the current economy.
